How To Become A Professional In The Copy Editing Service Sector

By Lucille Lamb

The main work provided by a copy editing service is preparation of pieces of texts that are meant for publication. This they do by checking the manuscript of the author. This manuscript is what is referred to as the copy. Most editors normally work on books. However, they may also edit text for brochures and even articles that are meant to be published in a journal.

Copyeditors mainly correct errors including spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors. Also, they ensure that a particular work has adhered to the house style. Words are also checked for correct meaning. It is also the work of a copyeditor to correct references so that they appear correctly quoted. If there are any pictures, they have to be accompanied by the right captions.

Copyeditors are also tasked with ensuring that there are no legal issues that might arise from the copy. These issues are things such as libel and defamation, copyright breach or partiality. In case extensive revision of a text is required, the copy editor will consult the author about the issue. Most of the time, copyeditors work on-screen although they may also edit hard copy documents.

Copyeditors working in-house would work within the normal working hours, that is 9 am to 5 pm. However, in order to beat deadlines, they may have to work extra hours. For a freelance copyeditor, he or she would normally work from home. They decide the number of hours to work. However, they will also need to deliver as per the agreed deadline.

However, it is not possible to capture every mistake in the text. This is because, when they are reading, their minds normally read what they thought they wrote and not necessarily what is in the paper. For someone who did not write the text, he or she will be more efficient since he or she is a stranger to the text. Also, the copyeditor would not possess emotional feeling to the manuscript, so he will approach it with an open mind.

For one to become a copyeditor, they have to obtain a degree which should then be supported by publishing experience. There are several universities and colleges that offer these degrees. For specialized editing, you must study that specific discipline. To work in scientific publishing firm for instance, you must have a science degree.

The job you can get immediately after completing your degree is an editorial assistant. At the time of starting, it will be easier for you to start working smaller publishers that are less well-known. Take this opportunity as it will help you in getting experience, developing your portfolio and building contacts. After that, you will be able to be considered by the bigger publishers.

If you plan of going into freelance job, the contacts will be very useful for you. If you land at a firm that offers on-job training, it can be very good as this helps you improve your copy editing service. This will really help you in your freelance editing.
