Marketing Advice For Local Search

By Therese Goodwint

In recent years, local business have been making use of the internet to find additional customers using local search marketing. We have some great advice here that will help a local business to keep one step ahead of their market counterparts.

Investigate Local Directories

Similar to any type of SEO, local search optimization plans take some research and knowledge. Look up your business on a search engine yourself. It's essential to find out how your business is listed on local directories, so doing this search is the best way to start. Your search should not be only for your own business name; plug in different variations of your address and phone number as well. As you uncover each listing, record the link and any details about the listing in a spreadsheet.

Third party data providers and local directories inform the search engines. Your business information is compared to the index kept by the bigger search engines using external data. Local directory data must be constantly updated to be sure that everything is always right and easily accessible. In addition to third party data, search engines use the citations in their index as a ranking factor. Name, address and phone number (NAP) references of a company on the internet are what citations cover.

Google Places

Use Google Places to list your business. Make sure you include as much information as possible. Be certain that the data on your company is accurate, including selecting the proper categories, your contact info, hours of operation and of course add a company description. The categories are one of the biggest parts; your business should have every appropriate category selected that reflects your business. The business in question should have the correct categories selected, if it's a French restaurant, select both "restaurant" and "French restaurant". This should then be accentuated by promoting the best of your business with exquisite photography of the products, (5 minimum) and of course an amazing cover photo.

Create Geo-specific Pages

Create location pages on site for multiple locations. If you have multiple locations, consider creating individual optimized pages on your website for each location. Be certain that you choose the right keywords in order to generate business in the area that you are focused on, use some words that are well known in the area. Landing pages are helpful, that direct customers to the part of your business you are focusing on in the region.

Boost your rankings in your local area by targeting the consumers in your region on your website pages, instead of wasting time advertising to those on the other side of the world. When you focus on local as opposed to global response, you'll see that the number of competing pages plummets dramatically, leaving you with a greater opportunity to punch through to the top position for your targeted keywords and keyword phrases.

Solicit Reviews

Last but not least, customer reviews are a very important part of your strategy. These make a tremendous difference when it comes to the results from search rankings, so when you have a satisfied customer, it's a good idea to ask them to leave you a nice review. Let customers know that their satisfaction and feedback are very important to you, and ask them to share their opinions on your website.
