Missouri Flag And The Flag Company Inc

By Susan Velvet

Missouri’s flag was designed by Marie Elizabeth Watkins Oliver in 1908 when she became the chairperson of a Daughter’s of the American Revolution committee to create a state flag. During the Civil War, the Missouri state militia carried a flag bearing the Missouri coat of arms which became central to Oliver’s design. Her design then materialized into a painted paper flag and proposed to the House, who turned it down. Unfortunately, a fire in the Missouri State Capitol destroyed that flag in 1911. So, Oliver sewed a new silk one which was adopted as the official state flag on March 22, 1913. The original flag can be seen today at the Secretary of State’s office in Jefferson City, Missouri.

When the French explorers arrived the area was inhabited by Native Americans of the Osage and the Missouri groups, and by the end of the 17th cent. French trade with the Native Americans flourished. The U.S. Territory of Missouri was set up in 1812, but the settlement was slow even after the War of 1812.

On the left side stands a grizzly bear and a crescent moon. The motto, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall,” surrounds the three parts within the circle. The coat-of-arms also features a yellow scroll at the bottom which reads, “Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto.” That’s Latin for, “Let the welfare of the people be the supreme law.” Below the scroll is the Roman Numerals for 1820, the year Missouri became a member of the United States. Above the shield is a knight’s helmet which has 23 smaller stars and one larger star to represent Missouri.

On March 23, 1936, the Nancy Hunter Chapter members attended a tea at the home of Mrs. Oliver to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the adoption of the Missouri State Flag. Mrs. Oliver and Miss Mary Kochtitzky told interesting facts about how the design of the flag evolved. Shared with the Nancy Hunter Chapter was the fact that Otto Kochtitzky, Mary Kochtitzky's father, a civil engineer known as the "father of the drainage system" in southeast Missouri, worked out the flag measurements mathematically.

The 3 primary colors, which are red, white and blue, being the national colors, stand for the virtues of heroism, purity, justice and vigilance. The bears represent mighty strength and power. The shield is divided into 2 halves. The right portion depicts the United States coat of arms. This is to signify the authority and control of the US over the state. The left half bears 2 images; a crescent moon, which is a symbol for the new state and the second one is a grizzly bear representing bravery. The motto "United We Stand, Divide We Fall" forms a part of the emblem. The bears are shown on a ribbon that reads the state motto "Let The Welfare Of The People Be The Supreme Law". Right below it, the Roman numerals MDCCCXX or 1820 indicates the year when Missouri became a formal state of the Union.

The moon also serves as a reminder that while Missouri had a small population and little wealth, there was hope it would increase like a crescent moon. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Missouri flag for the future.
