Options For A Suitable Guitar Repair

By Nancy Sanders

Many guitarists will at some point need to have a repair done to their instrument. There are many things that can go wrong with both acoustic and electric models and there are a few things to consider before having any work done. There are a couple of options available to you when looking for guitar repair and also a few things you can do to keep your guitar in good condition.

If you need a reoair the best place to go is to an instrument store in your local area. These shops will either carry out repairs on the premises or send the instrument away to an outside firm. Most stores will also offer an inspection and set up service for players and this can help to prevent serious faults.

There are now also many online repair services available to guitarists and in some cases this option can be more convenient. When you speak with them they will ask you what the problems are and get your instrument collected and taken to them. They will then decide what work needs to be done and contact you with a price for the job. If your guitar has to be taken by a courier it should be fully insured in case it gets lost or damaged in transit.

The price you pay for repairs will obviously depend on what kind of problem it is and how long it takes to fix. Small things such as tuning pegs and cleaning can be done fairly cheaply and quickly. More serious issues such as fret dressing and replacement of hardware will be more expensive and take a little longer.

There are some things that players should do to keep their guitars in good condition and in a playable state. Any instrument should be kept in its case when it is not being played to prevent knocks and other damage. When you have finished a playing session the guitar should be wiped over with a dry cloth before putting it away.

If you own an electric guitar it should undergo an inspection on an annual basis to keep it operating efficiently. The neck should be oiled and body cleaned and any dings touched up. The pickups and wiring should also be cleaned and checked for any wear and replaced if necessary. Strings should always be changed on a regular basis and this helps to keep a good tension on the neck.

An acoustic instrument will also require a certain amount of attention from owners to keep it operational. All woods should be kept free from dust and grime and special polish is useful for giving a protective finish. Any guitar that is not cased should be kept on a stand and not left leaning against a wall as this can seriously damage the neck and joint to the body.

When storing a guitar away for long periods there are a couple of things to be done beforehand. Always clean the instrument before putting it away for storage and keep it out of direct sunlight. Another tip is to use a sachet of silica gel in the case to absorb any moisture that may be present.
