Information On Heavy Duty Casters

By Mattie Knight

Productivity of equipment and the workers who use them is highly affected by wheels and casters installed. When the right heavy duty casters are selected, long term cost and productivity are maximized while earning the greatest return on investment. With that in mind, it is important to invest some time and resources in picking these devices. This article will present some important facts to consider before settling down on any kind or model.

The first consideration should be the load per caster. It is advisable to exceed the load per caster by at least thirty percent to ensure safe application of the device. This figure can be calculated by dividing the total weight that the equipment is supposed to move by the number of wheels that will be installed less one. One caster is excluded because it is assumed that no floor can ever be perfectly flat and so the weight is always supported by fewer wheels.

The next item of consideration is speed. Devices can only move at a given speed when supporting certain amounts of weight and failure to adhere to that causes damage. It is advisable to consider the worst case scenarios when calculating so as to account for possible discrepancies. Manufacturers can help with calculations for speed because they have systems for duplicating applications.

The next consideration should be the condition of the floor. Flat floors provide a nice surface for wheels to move on and guarantee a longer life span. However, presence of defects such as depressions or holes is a source of trouble because they inhibit smooth movement. If the device in use is of the wrong type, its longevity is likely to be reduced a lot. Floors full of defects need wheels that are high-rising.

Wheels can cause great damage to floors too. New wooden or ceramic floors are very delicate and metallic wheels can cause real damage. If one intends to keep the floor in good condition without marks and scratches, they may want to consider wheels with soft bases. There are many models that are made of softer materials such as plastic.

Wheel movement varies among models. There are two main types of movement, that is, unidirectional and multidirectional. Unidirectional devices maintain a straight course during movement, while multidirectional ones can rotate through 360 degrees and move into any direction. How the caster is attached to the vehicle also differ. Some use screw-ons or plates while others use stems. Mode of movement is supported by method of attachment. One must be straight with their facts and requirements before buying casters.

Today, technology has made it possible to produce models that are power driven and manual driven. Power driven models experience more force from the load, but also move faster. On the other hand, manual ones move slowly at the pace of the worker, but experience less force. Less force implies that longevity is increased.

Finally, one should consider the features incorporated to the device. Some of the most common features include locks, anti-bacterial material, and shock absorbency. Locks are important for controlling free movement of the equipment the wheels are attached onto. Additionally, when used in homes, locks are useful in keeping pets and children safe.
