Categories Of Pilot Study Equipment

By Ann Carter

A pilot study is a process in research that helps in finding out whether a particular procedure will work in the actual research by trying it out on a few people. The testing helps in understanding whether everyone involved in a study can understand the questions all in the same way. One can gauge whether the respondent feels uncomfortable with your procedure and whether your survey will complete in real time. Here are the types of pilot study equipment to consider.

Consider the retrospective interview process. You need to administer the interview process like an actual data collection to determine how the interview process works. One has to take records of the whole process from its beginning to its end. The results that you get will help you clarify the suitability of the survey depending on the culture of the respondents. From that point, you are in an excellent position to revise the questions and make them culturally appropriate.

Think aloud interview. In this process, the respondent must talk through their thinking as they try to answer every question. You can quickly determine whether the questions capture the exact data you intend to collect. For instance, when you ask about the number of people living in a particular household, a respondent might be hesitant to include a member of the extended family with the assumption that such a person is not part of a home.

Make examines and revise the tools. You need to debrief various observations to determine whether there is a typical pattern that requires attention. You can check for consistency of errors in the reporting process and make the necessary adjustments. Implement the new test with the same piloting group and verify whether it meets your expectations. This process is ideal in minimizing the number of errors incurred through this process.

Observation. Observation can sometimes be the best way to get data in the piloting stage. You can conduct it directly or indirectly depending on the kind of survey you are undertaking. Besides that, you might choose to collect the data through a continuous observation or via a set period. You can interpret data using various mechanisms such as descriptive observation, evaluation observation, and inferential observation.

Use questionnaires. Questionnaires or surveys are a set of questions standardized to explore different aspects like demographics, attitudes, opinions, and behavior. One can use online surveys other than the normal ones which require filling on a piece of paper. Some of the platforms that one can rely on include survey monkey, Google forms and poll everywhere.

Checklists. A checklist provides a structure for observation or evaluation of any performance or artifact. These are simple lists of criteria that one can mark as absent or present. They provide consistency over time between various observers. It is an ideal tool to use in evaluating a database, use in library space, structuring peer observation and virtual IM service.

Learn how to carry out case studies. Case studies require a lot of time since it focuses on in-depth descriptions of various elements in research. It answers multiple aspects related to the study. It involves both quantitative and qualitative research techniques. Analyzing data in this process begins with quantitative and ends with qualitative techniques. The qualitative procedure is quite detailed compared with the quantitative process.
