3 Talking Points Regarding Compression For Website Design Companies

By Arthur Williams

If you're unfamiliar with compression, you should know that this process reduces file size across the board. While this is most often associated with images, it can be applied to virtually all assets that website design companies develop. Compression is a subject that should be learned about, especially when you consider the benefits that it brings to the table. For those that aren't convinced, here are 3 talking points worth noting.

If you want to talk about compression as a whole, you're going to want to talk about performance as well. A website can look pleasing to the eye, but this won't matter if it runs poorly. Slowdown is a hindrance, as companies like Lounge Lizard can attest, but compression can keep this to a minimum. This is one of the reasons why said process matters, but there are others that web design companies can draw your attention to as well.

Compression is important for the sake of search engine optimization, too. If you don't know, SEO hinges on different aspects that websites have, one of the most important being performance. What happens if a site doesn't load up quickly, or doesn't translate well across different platforms? More likely than not, it is going to fall in terms of rankings. Fortunately, with compression enabled, search engine results will be much friendlier to you.

Perhaps one of the most important things to know about compression is that it doesn't exactly hinder visual quality. Yes, compression will result in smaller file sizes, which is the ultimate goal of the process in question. However, the fact that this can be done without making images pixelated or videos fuzzy makes it all the more worthwhile. It's a process that web designers should consider for this reason alone.

These are just 3 things that can be learned about compression, as it relates to web design, but there's no denying the fact that it matters all the same. In fact, without this process set in place, it's unlikely that websites will perform to the degrees that they should. If a site takes long to load or has assets that simply won't show up at all, chances are that a lack of compression is to blame. Fortunately, it's an endeavor that can be carried out with relative ease.
