By Michelle Miller

In the 492 BC to 449 BC, there were series of war that was fought between the person and the Greek. At the time of this war, the Persian Empire was the largest and the one, which was more potent. These bodies controlled a stretch of land that came from Egypt to India. On the other hand, the Greeks were made of some city-states like the Athens and Sparta. The cities used to fight against each other until the time that they united their force to fight against the Persia in the Ancient Greece Persia war.

The Ionians lived along the coast of the Turkey. However, the Persians conquered them. The Ionians did not like living under the new rule, and they asked for help from the Greek community. The Greek cities sent ships and weapons but the Ionians were defeated. As a way of making sure, that such an incident did not happen again, the Persian leader King Darius I decided to conquer the Greek Cities so that they can be put under control.

The king mobilized a vast army and sent troops to Greece. Around 490 BC the forces surrounded the whole of Greece with the hope of capturing them. What the Persians did not know was the fact that the Greeks were more experienced in war. During the war, the Greeks lost only 192 men of war but cleared an entirely 6000 Persian soldiers under the command of King Darius.

After the battle had been finished, the Greek army ran back 25 miles to their town, which was called Athens, to guard the Persian soldiers sent by King Darius from attacking them. This marked the origin of the marathon race.

Ten years after this incident when the son of King Darius who was known as King Xerxes decided to attack the Greeks to avenge his father. He decided to amass a massive army that was using one thousand warships to fight the Greeks. On the other hand, the people of Greece sent only 300 Spartans led by the king of Sparta known as Leonidas.

The Greek planned to meet with the Persian in the mountain that was known as Thermopylae. There was a narrow pass there, and this is where they planned to attack. The Greek held off the Army of King Xerxes, until when the personal found a way around the mountain and got behind the Greeks. Upon seeing this, King Leonidas told his army to flee, but he stayed behind with a small number of Spartans to fight so that they rest of the military could escape. It was here that King Leonidas lost his life.

King Xerxes with his army continued to match. When they reached the Anthers city, they found that it was deserted as the people who lived there had fled. However, the Athenian Fleet was waiting off the cast by the island of Salamis.

The vast army of; lead by King Xerxes attacked the Athenians ship. Since they were large, they were sure of victory. However, this was not the case as the Athenian ship known as Triremes were both fast and easily maneuvered. They rammed on the side of the Persian Ship and Sunk Them. Thus, forcing Xerxes to retreat.
