Job Responsibilities Of A Golf Course Builder

By Amanda Cook

Golf is one of the most lucrative sports in the world. Its spectatorship continues to grow every year as it penetrates into areas where it was previously unknown. That has led to many courses being built each year. To tap into the potential of this industry, many people have specialized in the art of building courses for people who need them. Basically, a golf course builder is a designer because they design courses and build them according to standard requirements.

Golf courses are not very easy to design as such. It requires being a landscape architect with proper understanding of utilization of space to achieve design requirements. The space is usually provided and it is the responsibility of the designer to convert into useful space for amateur as well as pro golfers to play in. One may have to travel to various destinations around the world in the course of doing their job.

Becoming a professional in the field of designing courses requires one to fulfill certain requirements. Academically, one needs to attain a bachelor or master degree in landscape architecture. A degree in landscape architecture equips learners with an understanding of natural resources and their limited nature. This understanding helps them to know how they can use space to design beautiful and practical spaces in various settings.

Many courses are covered under landscape architecture degree. They include technical, planning, foundational, and implementation design theory, environmental design theory, ecology, and visualization. How long it takes to complete a professional degree course varies, sometimes lasting up to 5 years. Academic path include doing projects, independent study, research, professional practice, and internship. Internship equips learners with experience and most employers prefer interned employees.

It is more advantageous in this field if the designer is also a golfer. Golf is a game that has no age limit. It can be played by senior citizens as well as children alike. One can learn how to play the game through self-taught methods or by taking lessons from professional training institutions. Playing the game itself on various courses allows one to compare the design in these courses so that they can know how to come up with better designs.

In field, in order to work as a landscape architect, one needs a license to practice in the state concerned. Obtaining a license involves passing the LARB-administered examination. The LARB administers this exam many times in a year to make it easy for people to sit for it. The requirement for sitting for this exam is a degree and 1-4 years of experience. These requirements vary from state to state however.

The licensure exam usually has five parts, and those who fail in it cannot be licensed. There are mandatory state examinations in some states too. After being licensed, one can start applying for a job with companies that specialize in designing courses.

One should consider joining a professional organization after they settle in employment. There are many such bodies in the US, with the oldest being the ASGCA. To become a member of the ASGCA professional organization, one has to pass an interview and the vote. The vote is held among members while the interview is conducted by peer-review board.
