Job Description Of A Golf Course Builder

By Larry Murray

Formal education as well as experience are major requirements in the process of designing of golf courses. Designing of courses falls under landscape architecture. Designers in this field specialize in renovating old courses and designing new ones. They have to plan and design the courses before the designs are implemented by builders. A golf course builder may also have enough expertise and knowledge to work as a designer.

Computer software applications have made it easier to design and plan the layouts of courses before constructing them. Some of the features that computer software can help to create include course obstacles, thoroughfares, walkways, and greens. The designer consults with the staff and owner of the site to ensure that all desired features are included.

The responsibility of golf course architects is to apply the knowledge they have in landscape architecture, agrostology, agronomy, and engineering to create unique courses. The aim is to achieve visual appeal and to make the landscape challenging for golfers to maneuver. Besides constructing features on the course itself, architects also design related buildings and they oversee how such buildings are built.

Some background knowledge in budgeting is necessary for making the project feasible to owners. Designers have the responsibility of ensuring environmental feasibility and economic viability of the site. There are normally several phases involved in the construction process, including constriction and planning. The work done in the various phases by various professionals such as civil engineers must be coordinated by the designer.

The architect has to evaluate the potential of the site. In the case of an existing course, these professionals evaluate the limitations on the site before remodeling. They also analyze the soil on the site and survey the topography. They team with scientists to carry out environmental impact studies so that they know the impact the facility will have on wildlife and vegetation. The master plan that the designer comes up with must be presented to the local municipalities.

The local authorities need the master plans so that they can approve them and give the needed building permits. After getting the local authorities to approve the master plan, the next decision to be made should concern the irrigation system and the type of system to install. One should also make the choice of turf at this point. When one is deciding on the issues above, they need to keep in mind the playability and sustainability and maintenance concerns.

A degree in landscape architecture is a prerequisite of working as a golf course designer. Part of the admission process into an educational institution may require one to present a portfolio. A portfolio may comprise photographs, CAD designs, freehand sketches, and paintings. The reason for the portfolios is to determine the level of creativity and visual communication instincts in the applicant.

Having a degree in any engineering course qualifies one to work as a designer too. This is because engineering courses offer educational background required. Some of the courses learners take under landscape architecture are chemistry, environmental science, and drafting. Spending a few months on internship can put one in a better position for getting a job.
