Write off your workspace. If you can create a dedicated room for your home office, you can write it off as a business expense. This covers a percentage of all costs, including mortgage or rent payments, utilities and insurance. Calculate the square footage of the area you use compared to the total square footage of your house, and divide the bills accordingly. Be careful though - the IRS will look closely at this type of expense.

You need to be determined and a self-starter, in order to be successful with a home business. Some counties have regulations specifying the criteria for buildings used for commercial purposes. Depending on your county's laws, you may want to consider having a separate office built on your property, so you do not have to bring clients into your personal residence. It also helps you prevent your work life and home life from melding into one unit.

Get a separate phone line or cell phone for your home office. Weeding out work-related calls from personal calls can be stressful as well as time-consuming. If you have a line just for your business, you can focus on the work at hand and leave the personal business for later!

If you are just getting started it is a good idea to offer something free to your customers. Many people do not want to invest their money into something they are not sure of, so offering them free products/services will give them an idea of what you are selling and let them know the quality of it.

You must determine how much you are going to price your merchandise for. Figuring the cost to produce your merchandise can help you decide what kind of profit margin you want. The usual price is the cost of creating your product, multiplied by two. This is the standard wholesale rate for most goods. Multiply your costs by three to get a starting point for your retail price.

To reduce distractions keep your office off limits to children. Have set work hours that enable you to run your business and still have time for your family. Older children should understand not to disturb you while you are working. For your business to succeed your family needs to be supportive and respectful of your work schedule.

Evaluate the work space in your home. Since you are just starting out, it's important to keep your overhead low and using your own home is a great idea. You must set aside a work area or space to conduct your business but should make sure you have the room.

When you are preparing your product for pickup or delivery add a special touch to the packaging. A small gesture like a personal note or an additional product sample, makes customers feel like you care and that you paid particular attention to their order. This will turn them into repeat customers.
