The Role Of Remotely Operated Vehicles

By Tammie Caldwell

As a result of the modern technological advancements, vehicles that can be operated under water without the need of an operator being on board exist. Their control is achieved in a number of ways. They are either attached to numerous cables connected to the vessels hosting the operator or a command is sent to them by use of signals. ROV is the abbreviation for remotely operated vehicles which have embraced this technology and play many important roles.

Scientists have taken this to their advantage and are using these vehicles in a number of ways. Through them they are in a position to carry out experiments in the deep sea, collect specimens to work with in the main land. They are also in a position to identify the types of creatures and plants that exist at certain depths. Through them they have been able to discover new findings related to their field.

Exploration may need to be done along the deep waters bed. Such areas are risky for human divers to reach and special equipment are called in. Such include ROVs. They use them to conduct surveys in these regions which at times results to discovery of minerals. Also they use them to take sample of the minerals for further testing.

ROVs are fitted with cameras and video recorders. This means that they get to take images as well as videos while in use. In case of accidents happening at the waters and the vessels sinking, they are used in identifying the location and any possible survivors. Also through them, ancient wrecks such as the Titanic were discovered.

Valued items may need to be retrieved from such wrecks at one point. Achieving this by use of divers is risky and may not be easily achieved. This equipment is availed in a manner that they can assume the human roles. They are therefore used in retrieving of equipment such as the black boxes and their ability to open compartments may save lives in case victims are trapped in an enclosure.

The military has embraced this technology in a number of ways. In times of attack, they come in handy as they are in a position of effectively determining an incoming attack vessel. They also find use in exploring foreign waters when planning an attack. Another use is in patrolling the water bodies a nation owns as a matter of enhancing national security.

The film industry has not been left out in embracing them. A scene may be planned to take place in deep waters or areas that are tricky for recording divers to get access to. Such are not enough to prevent the completion of a film as ROVs are adequately used to capture such scenes. Nature documentaries film makers have greatly benefited from them especially while covering aquatic related documentaries.

The gas and oil industry are among the top purchasers of these equipment. Deep sea beds are most likely to be rich in oil and gas deposits. The drillers are able to monitor their activities at these depths through them. In case of oil spills, the vehicles are also used to determine the damage caused and possible ways for handling the situation.
