Why Schools Should Digitize Yearbooks

By Martha West

Developments in technology and the Internet have made it possible to share publications online. Some media companies and authors longer print their articles and publications, their audience can access them through the Internet. Schools have also started to digitize yearbooks instead of producing hard copies. The following are the reasons making many schools consider digital yearbooks.

Digital books ensure that our environment is clean and trees are not cut down. Papers pollute the environment after people are no longer intend to read them. Online publications do not use papers and there is no waste pollution when they are no longer needed. There is no cutting down of trees which ensures that our precious planet stays green and we avoid problems such as global warming.

The cost of a paperless documentary is considerably cheaper. This reduces the total cost of a student's education without compromising its quality. Every year, parents are hit by the heavy burden of buying the expensively priced copies. Parents with more than one child in school suffer the most. Many of them have to buy multiple copies every year.

There is no limit to customizations that can be done in a digital yearbook. Unlimited high-quality images can be added and will stay in that same quality for ages. Videos and audios can also be added to give more details to the precious memories shared. Traditional paper copies mostly allowed students to only share one picture and a few words. This is due to the limited number of pages. There is unlimited space to share memories through digital formats.

Digital publications are easily shared. Yearbooks could be scanned or produced in digital formats and stored in CD and DVDs. Copies can also be shared with thousands of people through the Internet. Hard copies can only be shared by transporting them. Students often have to leave the book at home when they travel because it takes up space and it's also heavy. When it is in digital format, users can access it from anywhere due to easy portability and sharing.

It takes 14 to 21 days to have the book ready for the students. This means it can be available for longer maybe from the beginning of the year or term. Students will, therefore, be able to add more memories over the period of time. Memories from activities happening at the end of the year such as prom and spring athletics can be also included.

An online publication is more durable than a hard copy that can get lost and even cost more on a replacement. Future generations will only need to visit the school's website to look at memories made by students of a specific year. There is a permanent archive which makes it easy and quick to get additional copies at any time.

Paperless copies are accessible from all devices with mobile Web connections during the production process and after. Years later, you can share school memories with your children just from your mobile phone.
