How To Apply Insect Repellent Safely

By Roger Fisher

Mosquitoes and other insects can give you a terrible outdoor experience. They even invade your house and make it inhabitable. In some cases, they will turn you into a victim while ignoring everyone else. The best solution is to use insect repellent instead of living in a perpetual war with these insects. However, even the best repellents will disappoint if their application is poor. Here are tips that will unveil the magic in repellents.

Use the sunscreen as your base. It is applied before repellents to protect the skin since you will be outdoors. There are repellents that combine sunscreens to form a single product. They are not recommended even by CDC. The reason is that you will need more sunscreen than repellent. This means that you end up applying more repellent which will be a waste and might harm your body.

Apply repellents smoothly and evenly on vulnerable areas. This is not an invitation to soak your skin in repellents. Ticks and mosquitoes are known to be very aggressive beyond spreading some of the deadliest diseases. They can find even an inch of exposed skin. This is why you should cover the skin evenly. It is recommended that you go an inch into the uncovered areas.

Repellents are only supposed to be applied on exposed areas. Camping specialists recommend the use of trousers and long sleeve shirts since insects cannot bit beyond your clothing. However, the aggressive ticks and mosquitoes will find their way into your sleeves. The sensitive areas should be applied using hands to avoid wastage or negative reactions with the skin.

Apply some of the areas using your hands. This is recommended for sensitive areas especially around the eyes and ears. Do not spray directly on these areas because of the possibility of the spray getting to the delicate parts and in the process causing problems. Keep the sprays off wounds, cuts and areas with open skin. You should also wash your hands thoroughly before eating.

Pay attention to knees, ankles and other folds on your body. These spots are convenient and attractive to ticks because they can hop easily from ground level or plants. They do not capture a lot of oils or repellents, making them easy targets. Without spraying, they become easy targets and will negate the spraying of all other places. You will still be exposed if necessary attention is not provided.

Be cautious when applying repellents on kids. Their skins are delicate and likely to react negatively with your skin. According to CDC, children below 2 months should have repellents applied. Even when these children are older, direct spraying is not recommended. Instead, spray the repellent on your hands and apply on the child. Other precautions are as you would for adults.

Repellents should only be reapplied if the need arises. The average repellent will provide hours of protection. However, due to individual chemistry, there are people who attract more insects or the same insects more than others. If you are swimming or exposed to rain, the repellents will wear off the skin. If the insects begin to bite, it is a cue to reapply. It could also mean that your chosen brand is not as effective.
