Useful And Essential Facts About Foam Cutting Wires

By Frances West

Foam has vast uses that include cushioning and insulation. It should however be noted that foams are normally produced in large sheets that cannot be put to use in such huge sizes. Therefore, they have to be cut into smaller proportions that can be utilized easily. To be able to reduce foam in to appropriate sizes, one has to use foam cutting wires. These wires are uniquely designed to be used in cutting foam down to myriad shapes and sizes.

Today, there are several different foam types in use. Two among the most commonly known types are the extruded polystyrene and the expanded polystyrene forms. The two are denoted by the abbreviations XPS and EPS respectively. EPS foams are made of small beads and have variable strength, densities and weight. As a result, the forms are classified into sub-categories due to these differences.

EPS foams find a lot of use in the insulation of electrical appliances when they are being shipped. On the other hand, XPS foams are smooth and they are also available in different strengths. These foams find a lot of use in padding packages and in insulating walls in homes. As such, they are commonly found in packaging supply outlets and building supply stores.

Foam chopping wires are usually fitted with a tool. The tool usually has a handle that the user holds as they cut through the foam. Most tools can be used to cut through a wide range of foams. However, before using a tool to cut through a certain kind of foam, it is important to check manufacturer instructions that accompany it.

Manufacturers of these tools are normally specific about foams that their products can cut through. A machine can be destroyed if used on the wrong foam varieties. In some cases, accidental burns are bound to happen. It is therefore wise to follow user manuals provided by manufacturers. It is important to take such precaution in order to avoid accidents.

Usually, all foam cutters depend on heat in order to do the job. Resistive heating is used in heating the wire. This implies that the wire has high electrical resistance which allows for the change of electrical energy into heat energy. The hot wire can then be used to cut foams easily. Therefore, these electrical appliances require electricity to function.

When cutting foams, there are usually fumes that are produced. These fumes are usually made of carbon dioxide and water vapor in most cases, but other gasses may also be present. Given the composition of these fumes, their ability to be toxic is much lower. However, it is still highly recommended to work in a properly ventilated space. Accumulation of carbon dioxide can be dangerous.

Currently, these tools have different manufacturers in the market. This means that a variety of models exist which an individual can select from. It is important to have knowledge on the factors to consider before selecting a tool. One should talk to an experienced individual before purchasing so as to make a better choice.
