By Amanda Murray

A bodyguard refers to a trained professional whose responsibility is accompanying and providing protection to a high profile individual. Examples of people being protected include professional sportspeople, political office holders, corporate executives, and celebrities among others. These professionals also go by other names including personal security, security officers, and close protection officers and the individuals accompanied and protected do not always have to be high profile people. When in need of bodyguards Brentwood is the best place to visit.

Generally, individual who are protected by personal security are usually wealthy, political or public figures. Such individuals need protection against criminal offenses such as assault, assassination, kidnapping, theft, loss of confidential information, murder, and harassment. VIP security detail is the term used if the personal security is meant to protect a VIP. A security detail comprises of several personal security officers working in collaboration to protect a subject.

Security forces, police forces, and agencies usually supply bodyguards if the client is a head of state. If one is a head of state as well as a military head, Republican Guards, Royal Guards, and similar elite military units may supply the security detail. Public figures will lower security profiles are usually protected by a single driver bodyguard.

The roles of a bodyguard are mostly understood from depiction in action films. In the films, security officers are always engaging in firefights and combat with hostile subjects. However, the opposite is true in real life. Real life bodyguards assume more of a mundane role filled with repetitive tasks, which can make the job boring at times.

Bodyguards mainly undertake tasks such as pre-searching buildings and rooms the public figure will visit and planning itineraries. If the individual is planned to meet other people, the officer must run a background check on them and advise the client accordingly. The officers also search vehicles and escort their clients on their daily activities.

The responsibilities of a security officer are highly dependent on the type of client being protected. If protection is being provided by a team, each officer has a specific role. Such roles may include being a close protection officer, a driver bodyguard, or making part of a subsidiary team to support other members of the group. Support teams do tasks such as electronic detection, detection, and counter-sniper monitoring.

The level of threat a client is facing will also determine the role of the security officer. If the threat level is high, the officer will be more concerned about checking out for potential shooters in crowds, bombs, and IED devices. If the threat level is low such as stalking by aggressive photographers, the officer will mostly be involved with keeping the cameramen a safe distance from the client.

This job does not require one to have formal education. However, it may be an advantage to be educated in criminal justice. It is also mandatory to be trained in combat, defense, and weaponry. Private security firms and government agencies are among organizations that offer training to people. Training covers classes in threat assessment, unarmed and armed combat, and first aid.
