The Benefits Of Exposed Timbers And Beams

By Elaine Guthrie

When it comes to decorating the home, people often think of furniture and frames mounted on walls. They often tend to neglect some of the most attractive elements or additions that could provide the wow factor in any space. One of the most impressive elements could be as easy as installing exposed timbers and beams.

Beams and timbers which are exposed to the naked eye means that they are completely visible. These could definitely be simply decorative, while they can also be the real bones of the home or the structure. Whatever the case, they provide an architecturally stunning feature wherever they may hover. Consider adding them either in a bedroom, the living room or the dining room. The fact that they are so warm and attractive has made them quite popular in remodeling projects.

One needn't worry about shapes, sizes, lengths, or even wood species. No matter what, they can lend a unique appearance to any space. They can also come in the form of reclaimed wood. This is an environmentally friendly option. However, they could be completely new. In the case of reclaimed wood beams, which are extremely in demand, they lend an older and weathered appearance that can work in almost any decor scheme.

Whether new or reclaimed, the exposed timbers lend style to a blank empty space that lurks overhead. In doing so, it allows the ceiling to capture the attention it needs and deserves. Right next to white paint it can look stunning, but just as stunning with other interesting paint colors. It's important however, to get color just right, especially in the case of ceilings. For example, in standard size ceilings, dark colors can make the room too dim.

Vivid colors can sometimes be overpowering depending on the rest of the decor. However, light pastels can really raise the ceiling, especially when contrasted by deeper shades of the same color on the walls. Making the ceiling beamed makes it an architectural feature that will provide a unique look and feel to the space.

Certainly, some may be wary about such an addition because they aren't certain that it would suit their decor scheme. It's definitely an architectural feature that will provide something more than just items from eye level and below. All too often the ceilings are a blank canvas that have so much to offer, given the chance.

Consider a modern design scheme with white furniture, and an complementing white walls. While this look can be very sophisticated and attractive, think of how much more impact it would have with overhead beams of a contrasting color, such as rich browns. Automatically, this would evoke interest and appeal.

It's important to think outside the box when decorating. Certainly, the addition of these architectural features are a bigger investment than perhaps a rug, but it's also the wow factor but changes of the space immediately. In addition to that, considering it is an architectural feature, it will have a positive impact on property value. That said, homeowners should consider just how important it is to think of our homes as investment properties as well as the place in which we reside.
